In the current new millenium (21st Century),
doing business has become ever more competitive.
No company can afford to be stagnant and or too slow in responding
to the needs of the market, because it would be made redundant
and left behind.
In this age of "information technology" and "knowledge based society",
all companies need to be sufficiently prepared for the much
bigger and faster changes.
"Maximum utilisation of available resources" is no longer sufficient.
New resources must be procured in sufficient quantity and speed. Only
a proper understanding and acquirement of what kind of resources a company
really needs now and in the future, will ensure that a company stays
competitive and strong.
Among one of the most crucial resources of a company is its "knowledge"
base. Knowledge and skill is of fundamental importance in ensuring
the saleability of a company products and/or services. Therefore, a proper
management of the knowledge and skills of a company is needed.
Definition of Knowledge Management by Melissie Clemmons Rumizen, Ph.D:
"The systematic processes by which knowledge needed for an organization to
succeed is created, captured, shared and leveraged."
Knowledge Management & Skills Leveraging
An effective "Chief Knowledge Officer" (CKO) or "Chief Learning Officer" (CLO)
must be able to clearly identify the kind of knowledge and skills that
his/her company needs now and in the future.
First of all, the existing knowledge and skills available
in all the departments of the whole business organisation must be
accounted for. Then proper training systems and programmes must be
carried out promptly (without delay),
so as to maximise these available knowledge and skills.
Then, whatever additional or new knowledge or skill that is needed and not yet
available, must be procured and acquired from external sources
in order to supplement whatever resources the company already has.
As you can see, through proper
knowledge management
planning, supervision and implementation, the knowledge and skills required
for the survival and expansion of a company's core business
will be sufficient and taken care off in a timely manner.
Effective Knowledge Management
Good knowledge management
means effectively maximising and leveraging the existing knowledge and skills
of a company throughout the whole organisation.
At the same time, new knowledge and skills that are successfully procured and
acquired from external parties, must be promptly and systematically
passed down to all needed departments and branches.
Last but not least, strict and focused supervision of
knowledge management
is necessary to ensure its proper function and effectiveness.
Whatever fine-tuning must be done immediately to ensure the overall
functionability and value of all knowledge and skills in and for a company
or organisation is being maximised.
